6 good reasons for you to visit Malaysia... Truly Asia

Malaysia, my motherland, is an amazing destination if you're looking for an unforgettable holiday experience.  Yes, her weather may be perennially hot (average 29°C) but her sights are magical, her cuisines lush, her culture rich and her people friendly.  All these make Malaysia a genuinely unique place to visit.  So if you're wondering whether you should make Malaysia your next holiday destination, I'm going to present you with six good reasons why the answer should be "Hell, yeah!".

1.  Shop 'til you drop.  Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur (or KL), is a haven for shopaholics and one of the top reasons for visiting Malaysia.  According to a 2014 CNN report, KL ranks 4th on the list of the world's 10 best shopping cities.  In fact, you'll find here three of the world's ten largest shopping malls.  You'll be pleasantly surprised by the large number of shopping complexes here that carry everything from traditional handicrafts to the latest designs from Europe to brand-name goods you'll no doubt be familiar with.  And for about three months each year (usually July through September), Kuala Lumpur hosts the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival which is all about high quality shopping, affordable prices and reliable sales.  So come 'n' whip out the plastic!

2.  Gobsmackin' cuisine.  Malay, Indian, Chinese, Western; you name it, we've got it.  Not only is Malaysian food unbelievably divine, they're also relatively inexpensive.  On this note, make sure you try "nasi lemak" - our national dish - which can be found literally everywhere in Malaysia as well as "char koay teow" up in the island state of Penang.  CLICK HERE to find out more about nasi lemak as well as other favourite local dishes.

3.  Magical sights.  Revel in the unspoilt beauty of Malaysia, especially at her exotic island resorts and beaches.  Discover the hidden treasures of Pulau (meaning "island") Langkawi, Cherating Beach, Pulau Tioman, Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Sipadan and Mabul Island.  And while you're there, try your hand at snorkeling or parasailing.  If jazz or world music is your thing, plan your visit to coincide with the world-renowned Rainforest World Music Festival which takes place every June in the state of Sarawak.

4.  Wide range of outdoor activities.  There are lots to do in my country for those of you who love the great outdoors.  Engage in mountaineering, trekking, cycling, white water rafting and other adventure activities at our well-preserved peaks and national parks dotted all over the country, led by experienced and knowledgeable guides.  Don't worry too much about your level of fitness; there's something suitable for everyone here.

5.  Natural beauty.  Our beautiful million year-old rainforests look especially pristine during the monsoon, making it a good time to visit despite the occasional rain.  So after you're done shopping and clubbing in our cities, make time to visit our national parks and prepare yourself to be utterly awed by the splendour of these treasure troves of biodiversity and ecology.  Kinabalu Park, Kuala Selangor Park, Endau-Rompin and Mulu National Park are just some of the must-visits.

6.  Diverse culture.  This is probably the best reason for you to visit Malaysia - a land with a fascinating and unparalleled mix of cultures.  Here you'll find locals of various races and from different cultural backgrounds living in harmony.  A visit to the state of Sabah (where I live), for instance, provides an opportunity for you to observe her indigenous tribes in their natural environment.  Despite rapid modernisation, Malaysia has managed to keep her proud traditions and cultures intact - which is a good thing.

Seriously, with so much on offer in my country, you'll quickly find yourself spoilt for choice in terms of places to see, things to do and of course food to enjoy.  So the next time you're thinking of taking a vacation - be it an extended overseas sojourn or a brief escapade - you know you have at least 6 good reasons to give Malaysia serious consideration.

Just a minute... there's a 7th!  I'm here!

  3. Hey Vincent! Can't believe I've grown up flying to the Philippines but still haven't been to Malaysia yet. The geographies of the two countries seem very similar, and both have warm and happy people. There's something about that picture of one of Malaysia's national parks that seems to be calling out to me. Wanderlust strikes again! Hope to visit Malaysia soon, especially after reading this!
