The Big Blog Exchange 2014: Hooked on Dulce de Leche

Dulce de Leche
(pronounced "dool/seh deh leh/tcheh")
noun
A traditional Argentinian dessert made by caramelising sugar in milk.

Fact; I love desserts - more so those with caramel added.  I also like sugar in my milk.  I can therefore easily envision myself really enjoying a dessert made by caramelising sugar in milk.  Until recently, Dulce de Leche was something I'd only drooled over on TV and read about in food blogs - never tasted.  Yes, I've probably consumed more caramel than I have pasta in my lifetime but this was no mere caramel - that much I gathered; this was (they say) the real deal. I knew I had to try it sometime.

Enter the Big Blog Exchange (BBE) 2014.  When I got news that I'd be exchanged to Argentina, my heart was set on getting my first taste of Dulce de Leche.  And boy, did I get my first taste.... and second.... and third....

Believe the hype; this stuff is so good I refrained myself NOT from consuming it with near-vengeance during my 11-day exchange to Argentina in the BBE.  With only 60 calories per tablespoon, it was pretty much guilt-free indulgence for me.  Here are some of the stuff I had.

Dulce de Leche pudding!

Dulce de Leche spread!

Another Dulce de Leche pudding; this one's heavenly!

Dulce de Leche ice-cream!

Dulce de Leche milk bar!

Dulce de Leche coffee!

....and to think it totally skipped my mind to get a jar (or three) to share with those back home; how very thoughtful of me.  Now I can only tell everyone how good Dulce de Leche really is.

Have you tried Dulce de Leche before?  Are you a fan?  How do you like your Dulce de Leche (as a spread, topping or straight-in-the-mouth)?

  1. It's making my mouth water. I'm sure I'd come back 10 kilo heavier from Argentina. I've experienced it in Australia, but maybe not as good as the original.

    1. Hello, doctor. This stuff is excellent; seriously. A couple of hundred calories a day in the form of Dulce de Leche shouldn't kill, right?

  4. Hi Vince! I live in Uruguay, the small country next to Argentina :) and dulce the leche is a tradition here. I love it!!! Specially dulce de leche icecream but I also enjoy eating it with flan (another dessert made with milk and eggs).
